To all those who like e-mail forwards. [Dec. 31st, 2005|09:56 pm]
[Current Mood | amused]

My heartfelt appreciation goes out to all of you who have taken the time and trouble to send me "forwards" over the past 12 months. Thank you for making me feel safe, secure, blessed, and wealthy.

I want to thank you so much for looking out for me.

Now I would like to return the favor. If you don't send this e-mail to at least 144,000 people in the next 7 minutes, a large pigeon, with a wicked case of diarrhea, will land on your head at 5:00 PM (EDT) this afternoon.
I know this will occur because it actually happened to a friend of my next door neighbor's ex-mother-in-law's second husband's cousin's beautician.

Have A Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year!

PS I just had to forward this one!!!

Nobody knows how to plan? [Dec. 22nd, 2005|04:47 pm]
[Current Mood | annoyed]

"We apologize for the delay. We are currently receiving a higher than usual number of calls, but your call is important to us, and will be answered in order of priority. Thank you for your patience."

45 minutes later, I get transferred to MasterCard.

"Please note that we are currently receiving a higher than normal call volume, and you may wish to call back at a later time. Our operating hours are ..."

20 minutes later, I get told that this is something I have to take up with the bank. (i.e. why, 4 months after my student lien of credit was opened, I'm now receiving a second set of credit cards for it, despite the 2009 expiry on the first set...)

I give up for today.

Bookshare.Org and O'Reily Media publications [Dec. 21st, 2005|12:14 am]
[Current Mood | curious]

Does anyone know what the deal is between Bookshare and O'Reily, for us internaitonal visitors?

Legend has it, that O'Reily has always been very accomodating about providing e-Text versions of their books to customers (who have purchased the requisite print edition, of course). I'm currently digging around for a book on Python, and I'm getting the distinct impression (from the Bookshare page on O'Reily) that Bookshare now has some ridiculous monopoly over this, and that although in the past, individual customers could obtain e-Text directly from the publisher, this is no longer the case.

Personally, I have a very big problem with this arrangement if it is, indeed, the case. I, as an international customer, would be very put off, if O'Reily turned around and told me (after purchasing said book) that the only way to obtain an accessible copy of it, was to join Bookshare ($75 USD for the first year, ~$110 CDN, 3 times the cost of the book). Especially since, save for O'Reily's books, Bookshare is 100% useless to Canadians.

So... does anyone know whether this is actually the case? It sounds like it to me, but ...

Tech Tip: Windows XP SP2 and Bluetooth [Dec. 17th, 2005|02:08 pm]
If anyone is planning on getting, or has had trouble with, Bluetooth adapters, and you're running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (like most of the world), there is a bit of a problem. Microsoft included generic drivers for many, many Bluetooth driver chips with SP2, and will thus automatically detect most adapters when they are plugged in. The problem is that although your adapter may very well contain the chip that Windows detects, Microsoft's built-in drivers aren't always (usually) appropriate for the device itself.

Installing the included drivers from CD or the Internet will usually not work, either, because the Microsoft drivers take priority (as they are 'Microsoft certified,' whereas most manufacturers couldn't be bothered with this).

Solution: Rename or move C:\Windows\Inf\Bth.Inf (or %WINDIR%\Inf if Windows isn't installed in its normal location), then install the provided drivers.

(Took me about an hour to figure this out, so I figure I might as well save someone else the trouble...)

Man gets 6 years for drunk driving
Last Updated Thu, 15 Dec 2005 15:23:08 EST
CBC News

A man in Ontario has been sentenced to six years in jail for drunk driving – a penalty that may be the most severe ever handed down in Canada for an incident in which no one was killed.

Charly Hart of Watford, 45 kilometres east of Sarnia, has a 35-year record of impaired driving that includes nearly 60 previous convictions. Thirty-nine of those were for drunk driving and related offences.

Why I can never be an academic ... [Dec. 12th, 2005|10:59 pm]
Ok, I'm reading an article here... it's setup to print on a 6 inch by 7 inch page, so not even a full 8.5x11 ... 12 point times new roman font, single spaced. 30 pages long including cover page. I am on page 24, and I'm at footnote #211.

Every page is two-thirds footnotes, one-third text... ummmm... all I can say is thank God they used footnotes and not paranthetical notation.

But why the heck do you need to cite that many things in such a short document? I mean ... is there anything, umm, of your own?

OC Transpo Strike Date Set [Dec. 2nd, 2005|12:31 pm]
[Current Mood | worried]

Well, this is glorious. Exams start next week, and now it looks like we won't have any bus service. Not to mention, no money during the Christmas season, since my dad is one of those drivers...

OC Transpo Strike Set for Monday

Norman Jack

Friday, December 02, 2005 9:13 AM

The president of the Amalgamated Transit Union has confirmed to CFRA news that there will be a strike at OC Transpo starting Monday morning, if a new contract agreement isn't in place.

Bob Simpson is briefing drivers and mechanics at this hour, but he says contract talks are not going well. There are still outstanding issues regarding wages, working conditions, and benefits.

Simpson and other union officials are handing out an information sheet to drivers and mechanics, telling them to report to work early Monday morning, but be prepared to set up picket lines. The information also tells them to contact their bank managers, purchase any needed medicine, and prepare their families for a strike.

The union will give the official strike notice to the city at a meeting later today.

It's not yet known if the two sides will continue negotiations through the weekend.

What obsolete skill am I? [Nov. 17th, 2005|09:53 am]
It 's comforting to say that 'practice makes perfect'....
You are 'Gregg shorthand'. Originally designed to
enable people to write faster, it is also very
useful for writing things which one does not
want other people to read, inasmuch as almost
no one knows shorthand any more.

You know how important it is to do things
efficiently and on time. You also value your
privacy, and (unlike some people) you do not
pretend to be friends with just everyone; that
would be ridiculous. When you do make friends,
you take them seriously, and faithfully keep
what they confide in you to yourself.
Unfortunately, the work which you do (which is
very important, of course) sometimes keeps you
away from social activities, and you are often
lonely. Your problem is that Gregg shorthand
has been obsolete for a long time.

Confession of Gum Swallower:

This is the confession of a gum-swallower. I admit it. For as long as I can remember, I have always swallowed my bubble gum instead of throwing it out.
This used to be a major subject of contention with my mother when I was a child, as she was convinced that the practice would lead to my untimely demise.
The gum mass was indigestible according to her, you see, and as such could not pass properly through the gastrointestinal tract. I was at great risk of
numerous medical conditions because of this questionable assertion, including ""twisted intestines,"" ""stomach pileup,"" and choking to death on my own vomit after the bubble gum body inevitably attempts to escape through my esophagus, closing the pipes indefinitely on the way out.

Naturally, I never believed a single word the old lady said. I've been a gum-swallower my entire life, right up until my mid-20s. It was only then that
I experienced a veritable epiphany of how wise my mother may actually have been.

Earth element
Your element is Earth. You have your feet on the
ground and are in touch with reality. Some may
say you need to lighten up, but you are just
not that way. It's not that you don't enjoy
having fun, you only find it in more calmer
activities such as writing or reading a book.
But before you have your fun you always make
sure your work is done. You are considered the
reliable one among your friends, you would
never betray anyone just like and are not
influenced on peer-pressure. Friends and family
can always come to you for guidance because you
are wise and smart. You know what is right and
what is wrong and you study hard to become
something big in the future. The bad side is
that your friend/s feel ignored when you spend
more time with books and papers rather with
them. You are not such a people person and are
sometimes a question-mark on how to behave
around them at certain times. Luckily it always
works out, somehow. Love is not really desired
in your world right now, maybe in the future
when you've got a work and so on under control.
After all, you are a perfectionist. Rate and
message!

The art of paper pushing [Oct. 14th, 2005|10:36 am]
[Current Mood | thoughtful]

It was said, some years ago, that the introduction of personal computers to the workplace and the widespread adoption of digital technologies, paper would be a thing of the past; we would work digitally, with no need to run files back and forth, have mass archives of paper, and generally waste time filling out forms in quadruplicate.

Why, then, was most of my afternoon yesterday taken up by photocopying receipts, filling out forms, stapling things together, putting paper clips on them, and running back and forth to deliver them?

Such an unproductive use of time...

Why Ottawa always gets it wrong! [Oct. 1st, 2005|11:56 am]
[Current Mood | cynical]

Why Ottawa Always Gets It Wrong

---by Clive Doucet---

I thought the Editor’s Message in the August 2005 edition concerning Ottawa's pitiable ability to protect heritage buildings and the integrity of its neighbourhoods was a great Cook's tour of disasters from the past. Without repeating them all, the four at the top of my list would be: 1) the destruction of LeBreton Flats; 2) the ripping up of the city's streetcar system and displacing the rail station from Confederation Square to Alta Vista; 3) the demolition of the Capital Theatre; 4) the construction of the Macdonald-Cartier bridge followed by the transition of King Edward Avenue from a beautiful, treed boulevard to a truck route.

And it's so true. The city always seems to be far more interested in building more roads, than fixing their beleagered public transit system. I stood at the Laurier stop for 40 minutes yesterday, trying to get out to Orleans. 2 #27's and 2 #20's drove right past, packed to the bursting point. About 6 #95's also passed me by, packed like sardine cans (or, as my dad likes to call them, cattle cars). And they call this a "service"?
